The word Entitlements has taken on a whole new meaning in recent
times. It's a dirty word. It's in the same ranks with
/Handouts/. There is a huge difference. Dictionary says:
- the fact of having a right to something.
Let's examine this in the context of Social Security. Everyone that
earns a wage pays into the Social Security program run by the Federal
Government with the agreement that the Federal Government then gives
that back when we retire. Note that the Social Security check that we
get isn't a freebie that the Government is handing out. It's our
money that we squirreled away with the government during our entire
working lives. We are owed that money. We have a right to that
check. You might say we are Entitled to that money. It's our life
savings that we've entrusted to the Federal Government.
Same deal with Medicare. We have paid into it all our lives. We are
Entitled to it when we retire.
Paul Ryan is in the process of giving a huge tax cut to millionaires
and billionaires. He plans to pay for it by cutting
Entitlements. Meaning, he's planning on raiding our life savings to
give it to the rich. In other words, he's taking our Entitlements -
what we have a right to - and handing it out to millionaires:
